Battery
LFP battery in the cold.
My Model Y Standard uses an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery. It's tough and happy to charge to 100%, but it's more sensitive to cold than the NMC packs in the Premium trims.
What changes in the cold
- Range drops; NRCan says up to 25–30% in extreme cold.
- Regenerative braking may be limited until the pack warms.
- DC fast-charging speeds are lower on a cold pack, so precondition on the way to a Supercharger.
Habits that help
- Plug in at home whenever you can; Tesla's guidance for LFP is to charge to 100% regularly Unconfirmed.
- Use preconditioning while plugged in.
- Park in a garage if you have one.

I film all of this on my own 2026 Model Y Standard. Watch on The Electric Standard on YouTube.
