Owning a Tesla Model Y in Ontario.
Green plates, HOV and HOT lanes, insurance and registration for a Tesla Model Y Standard in Ontario.
Green licence plates
Battery-electric vehicles are eligible for Ontario's optional green plates. They cost the same as regular plates and are only available in person at ServiceOntario, not online.
HOV and HOT lanes
With green plates you can use HOV lanes with any number of occupants, and HOT lanes on 400-series highways and the QEW at no cost. Enter and exit only at marked zones.
Off-peak HOV proposal
Ontario has proposed letting single-occupant vehicles use HOV lanes off-peak, possibly before the end of 2026. Status: TBD, check the latest news.
Insurance
Premiums vary widely by driver, postal code and insurer. TBD: get several quotes for your exact trim and VIN. Ask about winter tire discounts.
Registration
TBD: confirm with Tesla at order time how registration and plates are handled for your delivery, and whether you need to visit ServiceOntario (required for green plates).
Electricity plan
Ontario's Ultra-Low Overnight plan prices 11 p.m.–7 a.m. at 3.9¢/kWh. Compare plans in the OEB bill calculator before switching.
